Your Real Deadline Is March 30, 2028, Not 2029
2029 is when Data Center goes read-only. 2028 is when your options close — the last day to renew, add apps, or add seats. For most customers, 2028 is the date that actually forces a decision. Toggle between all three below.

Last day existing Data Center customers can buy new subscriptions, add Marketplace apps, or expand user counts. After this, no more Data Center purchases — for anyone, at any size.
How This Actually Affects You
The dates are the same for everyone. What they mean for you depends entirely on which of these three you are — and for the large majority of Data Center customers, the date that actually closes off options is March 30, 2028, not the 2029 read-only date most coverage leads with. The people with the least warning are usually the ones who don't have an Atlassian account rep calling to walk them through it.
You've never bought Data Center
This one's already over. New-customer sales and trials closed March 30, 2026. If your organization didn't hold a paid Data Center subscription before that moment, buying in is off the table permanently — no exceptions, no reopening. Your only paths forward are Cloud, or a non-Atlassian platform.
You're a current Data Center customer — this is you
March 30, 2028 is the date that actually matters: your last chance to renew, add Marketplace apps, or expand user counts. After that date, no more purchases at all, for anyone, at any size — your existing licenses keep running on whatever term you last bought, but every one of them goes read-only at the latest by March 28, 2029. There's no size threshold that changes this: a 50-seat shop and a 5,000-seat enterprise are on the identical clock. Treat 2028 as the deadline to plan against — 2029 is just when the consequences of missing it land.
You're a former Data Center customer — no active renewal right now
Atlassian defines “existing customer” as any organization that ever paid for a Data Center subscription before the March 30, 2026 cutoff — not organizations with a subscription currently in force. Read literally, that means a lapsed account likely still keeps purchasing rights through March 2028. Don't bank on it without confirming: reinstating a lapsed license isn't the same transaction as a normal renewal, and back charges or other conditions may apply. Ask your Atlassian contact or partner before assuming you have until 2028.
Atlassian's only named carve-out is “Extended Maintenance by Exception” for organizations with unusual migration constraints, evaluated case by case — it's not a general grace period, and it's the kind of thing you typically hear about through an account rep. Large accounts have one. Most smaller Data Center customers don't, which is exactly why this deadline is likelier to sneak up on them.

Atlassian's Own CFO: Customers Are Already Buying Time
This isn't just a countdown page's framing — Atlassian confirmed on its own Q3 FY2026 earnings call that Data Center customers are already changing their buying behavior ahead of the deadline. Roughly $50 million of Data Center revenue that quarter was a pull-forward: upfront purchases and expansions recognized earlier than expected, specifically because customers could see the deadline coming.

That's a customer buying time, not a customer migrating — and it corroborates treating March 30, 2028 as the date the market is actually planning against, not the 2029 read-only date most coverage leads with. The same report describes complex estates as “committed to migrating but [taking] multi-year journeys to get there” — worth knowing if you're assuming a migration is a matter of weeks once it starts.
Jira and Confluence Aren't on the Same Clock as Bitbucket
“Data Center end of life” is a product-specific policy, not a blanket sunset of self-hosted Atlassian. Jira Software, Confluence, Jira Service Management, Bamboo and Crowd Data Center — plus their Marketplace apps — all sit on the exact same three dates. Bitbucket Data Center is carved out of the first two of those dates — it keeps selling past 2026 and 2028 — but not the third: Atlassian's own Hybrid License page states that standalone Bitbucket Data Center licensing ends on the same March 28, 2029 date, and the application goes read-only that day too. The only supported way to keep running it past then is the Bitbucket Hybrid License, which requires an active Bitbucket Cloud subscription alongside it, at a price Atlassian hasn't published. “Not affected” in the first two columns describes the sales cutoffs only, not the end-of-life date — Bitbucket Data Center shares the March 28, 2029 read-only date with everything else above, it just keeps a purchase path open in the meantime.
