Your Build Already Needs Cloud. By 2029, So Does Your Code.
Bamboo — the only self-managed CI Atlassian ever sanctioned to run beside Bitbucket Data Center — already has no self-managed replacement; Atlassian's own migration tool points it at Bitbucket Cloud. Bitbucket Data Center keeps selling past that date, but its own standalone licensing hits the same March 28, 2029 wall, and the only way to keep it running afterward is a license that requires Bitbucket Cloud too.
What Atlassian's Own Pages Say
Three Atlassian pages, none of them written to make this point, all saying the same thing from a different angle:

“Bitbucket Data Center is a subscription product, so after March 28, 2029 at 23:59 PST, the Bitbucket application will switch to read-only mode and users will no longer be able to push code.”
“Audits now surface the exact plugin key for every unsupported task, so you know precisely what needs attention.”

Keep the Code. Lose the Build. Then Lose the Code Too.
Atlassian has never offered Bitbucket Pipelines on Data Center, and Bitbucket Data Center's own documentation for integrated CI/CD names exactly two options: Bamboo or Jenkins. After March 28, 2029, Bamboo Data Center is gone — support ends that day, same as every other Data Center product. Bitbucket Data Center keeps a separate purchase path open past the 2026 and 2028 cutoffs that hit Bamboo, but its own standalone licensing ends that same March 28, 2029 day. Atlassian's own page is explicit: the application “will switch to read-only mode” at 23:59 PST.
Which leaves this: after 2029, the only self-managed CI Atlassian has ever sanctioned to run beside Bitbucket Data Center is a product Atlassian retired with no self-managed replacement — Atlassian's own migration tooling for Bamboo customers, built, GA, and shipped in June 2026, points build plans and deployment projects at Bitbucket Pipelines, which runs in Bitbucket Cloud only. And the only way to keep Bitbucket Data Center itself running past the same date is the Bitbucket Hybrid License, which requires a Bitbucket Cloud subscription. Whichever half of this pairing you look at — the build or the code — Atlassian's own sanctioned path after 2029 runs through Bitbucket Cloud. There is no self-managed destination in Atlassian's own answer to the problem Atlassian created.
Even Atlassian's Competitors Get This Wrong
This isn't an obscure reading of Atlassian's own documentation. On 25 June 2026, the same week Atlassian confirmed Bamboo Data Center's 28 March 2029 end-of-life, JetBrains' TeamCity blog covered it too — and told Bamboo customers to choose between “Bamboo Cloud or moving to an entirely new CI/CD solution.” There is no Bamboo Cloud. Atlassian has never shipped one, and its own migration tooling points Bamboo customers at Bitbucket Pipelines, a different product with a different configuration model. A competitor actively trying to win these customers away named a product that does not exist as one of two options.
Atlassian's own GA announcement for the Bamboo-to-Pipelines migration tool claims teams “can reduce their total cost of ownership by up to 70% at scale” — worth reading, not worth repeating as fact. It's a vendor's own unsupported figure with no published methodology, cited here only because a reader comparing options should know it exists and know exactly how much weight it deserves: some.
Where This Argument Runs Out
Two caveats worth stating plainly, because they're what make the rest of this credible:
Jenkins is a genuine, well-supported CI platform, and plenty of shops already run it in production today. Nobody running Bitbucket Data Center is stranded. This is an argument about platform coherence — that Atlassian's own sanctioned path leaves self-managed CI — not a claim that self-managed CI stops being possible.
The March 28, 2029 date on Bamboo's end-of-support page is the standard, site-wide Data Center banner that appears across Atlassian's documentation, not a Bamboo-specific announcement. Atlassian isn't singling Bamboo out — it's letting Bamboo expire on the same generic schedule as everything else in the wind-down, and Bitbucket Data Center's own standalone licensing expires on that exact same date too. The real difference is narrower than it first looks: Bitbucket gets a separate, Cloud-tied continuation path past that date (the Hybrid License) that Bamboo doesn't get at all.
